THE ART OF BEING A SUSTAINABLE MANAGER

Communication is exchanging ideas; exchanging thoughts and beliefs. When we talk about communication within a company, we could say that the opinions and mode of communication mirror each worker’s childhood; how they were educated, their relationship with their parents, their concept of authority. All these ideas impregnate the organization like the trace of humidity on a wall. This trace is what gives every organization its unique and non-repeatable characteristics.

Managers, with their different specialties, deal with thoughts, beliefs, ideas and actions. A sustainable manager is the one in charge of establishing integration mechanisms so that individuals are participants in the collective that is called the company and can connect the company to a greater world called ‘country’, which, in these terms, is formed by its citizens’ thoughts.

Buddha said, “If you want to change the world start with your own thoughts”. Many other teachers have taught us the same thing but most of the time our history continued, more or less, to stay the same. We often create, or recreate our deep, subconscious beliefs, which are often the opposite of what we consciously want, thus attracting to our lives more of what we already have and projecting on to others what we think about ourselves. Thus, we use our power of manifestation to attract things and situations that we do not really want. What a waste of energy!

Our actions pertaining to relationships and communication begin with ourselves. Our imagination and our perception are activated at a very early stage. We absorb with hallucinating speed and copy what we think is convenient for one particular moment in life; our ACTIONS have been present from the beginning of our lives and our DECISIONS, too.

We can strengthen ourselves and we can also transform limiting “conditioning” from the past. Krishnamurti said, “Self-knowledge is the beginning of wisdom, and therefore the beginning of transformation or regeneration”. Questions to ask yourself : What is the quality of my thoughts? How do my emotions affect my accomplishments? How can I use my power for self-transformation?

As we move from the inside towards the outside, we begin to enjoy the discovery process of self-knowledge. Then, rather than condoning we observe and support others to mature and assume their responsibilities. Llittle by little, we find ourselves sharing the same leaders’ cabins. Little by little, we become aware that there is a leader within each of us with unique characteristics and at the same time, held in common with the others. Little by little, we grow and communicate and we relate to others in a better way. Thus, we begin to have other transcendental restless thoughts, beyond our daily events, great or small and, little by little, we become aware that we have always been the builders of our lives and also of our society. The difference is that we now own and enjoy it.

Observing, analyzing, synthesizing and making decisions are natural processes of human beings. What is not commonly realised, is that often this process can be consciously done. It is the sustainable manager’s job to take the responsibility to facilitate the processes. This means following natural processes consciously, no doubt, a good way to save energy. Being conscious is ecological.

I visualize the Human Being free from emotional ties and full of the possibility to expand and relate to others. I visualize the Human Being as thankful to be living and able to access a balanced education that will allow us to express what we already have within us, completing it through the external world. I visualize a reflexive Human Being, with joyful communication and relationships, both within and outside of the organization.

The art of being a sustainable manager includes observing, supporting and assuming responsibility for being the builders our own lives and of our society as well. As we enjoy living, growing, developing, the organization is just another platform to unfold our wisdom and meet the needs of communication, relationship, creativity and sustainable production.
