Sustainable personal development with Michael de Glanville

Many of us feel an instinctive nature to reach out and care for our friends and family. By simply helping them to relax, we know we can increase their well-being. The goal of this training programme is to enable participants to put into practice their caring nature. It aims to transmit practical experience of the above techniques, together with the confidence and the personal presence which transform touch into a healing art.

It is well known that stress and relaxation cannot exist in the same place at the same time and the purpose of all these techniques is to induce a state of deep relaxation in the receiver, dissolving the mental and physical states of stress present in their body. By entering the centred mind state fundamental to the practice of these techniques we are also caring for ourselves. Furthermore, the knowledge that we absorb on this pathway of learning will enhance our understanding both of ourselves and of others.

Though the four therapies presented differ greatly in their method of application and their effects, they all share the quality of boosting the individual’s self-healing ability. Shiatsu, Reflexology and Korean relaxation require specific knowledge and application techniques, whereas Aromatherapy massage involves stroking and kneading movements that are very natural to us all.

Shiatsu is a Japanese system of physical therapy and is given with the fingers, thumbs, elbows knees or feet. It concentrates pressure on specific points on the meridians seeking to rebalance the energy flow. It is received with the clothes on and is particularly effective as preventive medicine or as a revitalisation during convalescence after an illness.

Reflexology uses the principle that the pressure massage of particular points on the feet can transmit healing energy to corresponding organs in the body. In this way, a massage of the feet can create deep general relaxation and healing.

Korean relaxation, which is also received with clothes on, attains its aim through mobilisation of the limbs and the muscles, bringing areas of chronic muscle tension to the attention of the receiver and catalysing their release by shaking, stretching and vibration.

In Aromatherapy massage, the hands move systematically over the body in flowing sequences, applying specific essential oils to the skin. The combination of the calming, soothing effects of the touch and the healing qualities of the essential oils bring about stress release and transform mood and interior vibration.
